It is becoming increasingly common to see athletes wearing compression stockings - do they all have a vein condition for which the medical stockings are normally worn? In many cases, no - and yet there are good reasons why you should wear compression stockings during sport.
Compression stockings for sport - yes or no?
In fact, even people without vein problems can benefit from compression stockings when doing sport. The pressure ensures that the strain on the legs is reduced. This not only makes many people's legs feel lighter during exercise, but also afterwards: support stockings also have a positive effect on regeneration, so that the legs don't feel so heavy after jogging or walking. Even sore muscles can be contained or prevented altogether.

How do compression stockings work?
To understand why support stockings have a positive effect during sport, you need to understand how they work: compression stockings fit tighter than normal stockings, but are elastic. The pressure they exert improves blood flow to the heart. The lymphatic system is also relieved. Especially people with
- venous disorders
- pregnant women or
- air travelers
are recommended to wear medical stockings. They are therefore worn in the event of illness or as a preventative measure. Class 1 or 2 compression stockings are worn almost exclusively to prevent swollen legs - including during sport.
For which sports are compression stockings useful?
Can every athlete wear compression stockings? Basically, they are mainly used for running sports, i.e. for
- jogging
- walking or
- soccer.
Of course, you can also do yourself some good and wear compression stockings when hiking in the mountains or on long walks. They certainly make sense for other sports too - if you are not a competitive athlete with a prescribed outfit, you can always talk to your trainer or GP.
