Varieties & season
The true bilberry comes from the heather family and is also known as the blueberry, wild bilberry, wild bilberry or cranberry. Typical: it colors fingers, teeth and tongue blue. The cultivated blueberry, as we know it from the supermarket, is descended from the American blueberry. They are a little larger and have a slightly more neutral taste. You can usually buy the fruit from local cultivation from June to the end of September.
Power berries
They contain lots of vitamin C and E, beta-carotene and essential minerals such as potassium. They also have a high content of tannins, which can reduce inflammation. However, their greatest asset is their antioxidant anthocyanins. These plant pigments not only give the berries their blue color, they also prevent diseases such as diabetes when consumed regularly, ensure a healthy gut and protect our eyes and skin. Studies have also shown that a daily cup of blueberries reduces the risk of cancer.
Variety of shapes
Blueberries are also available in dried or frozen form. The fresh variety contains the most nutrients. But organic is better. Researchers have found that organic blueberries contain significantly more valuable antioxidants.
Purchase & storage
The berries should ideally be firm, firm and evenly colored. Shake the container carefully. If the berries do not move freely, this may be a sign that they are moldy. Once purchased, they can be kept in a covered container in the fridge for about three days.
