Learning to let go: how to shed unnecessary ballast

Learning to let go means feeling freedom. Floating carefree through life like a bird in the wind - a beautiful idea. However, we often allow ourselves to be dragged down by everyday problems and feel overwhelmed. Then there are the things that we accumulate and collect - without realizing that they take more strength from us than they give. Time to let go of everything that prevents us from spreading our wings and flying away.

We often have to let go of certain things first - in order to recognize what is good for us and what we really need.

Learning to let go of old habits and break new ground again

When we are busy running in our hamster wheel, we don't even realize that habits are creeping into our lives that are not good for our souls, but rather burden them. So let's keep a written record of our daily routine and note how we feel each time. What do we really enjoy about our daily activities and tasks? Where could a change make us more satisfied, more balanced and happier? Once we have clearly formulated this, it will be easier for us to let go of the old and take new paths - ones that really help us move forward.

Celebrate your own strengths and don't compare yourself

Others have it so much better in life? Are they more successful, prettier, more popular? Comparing ourselves with others often leads to self-doubt or even envy. Let's let go of these negative feelings. Let's look at ourselves instead. With an honest, loving look. Forgive ourselves for our weaknesses and mistakes. Let's ask family, friends and colleagues what they specifically admire about us, what they value us for, why we are important to them. Let's be happy about our small (and big) successes and our strengths every day. We are good the way we are.

Sort out the useless and clear our heads

Too many possessions can be a burden, as can too many worries. Let's learn to let go and travel light from now on. Let's sort out everything that, if we are honest with ourselves, no longer brings us joy in our everyday lives and that we don't associate with positive thoughts. Let's also release our inner critic: let's write down on a piece of paper all the things that weigh us down and make us feel small. Then tear it up into small pieces. Get rid of it!

Shake off problems and think positively again

There are days when everything seems to go wrong. We ask ourselves: "Why is it always me?" We feel at the mercy of fate. A very stressful thought. It is then important to distance ourselves from our worries and problems: They are external, not part of our inner life. They don't have to have power over us. It is up to us how we evaluate them and how quickly we detach ourselves from them. We can gratefully accept them as an experience - and then send them away. Just like the burden of deadlines and obligations that drag us down. Let's loosen up our body, take a deep breath. Then we transform all "must" appointments into "want" appointments. Our thoughts are free, and they set us free. If that doesn't inspire you ...

10 things we should get rid of

... because they prevent us from leading a happy and fulfilling life. Nobody needs them!

  1. Worry Worrying is like asking for things we don't really want.
  2. Facade We don't have to be accepted by everyone, we don't have to pretend. We are unique.
  3. Pressure It's not necessary for us to be able to do everything. The best way to learn something is to try it out.
  4. Hard mistakes happen to everyone. Let's try to tick them off quickly. Let's be generous, even to ourselves.
  5. Self-compassion Let's stop blaming others for our feelings. We always have a choice: accept things - or change them.
  6. Perfection We don't always have to perform at our best. And if we have problems, we can ask for help.
  7. Regret There is nothing to regret, only to learn. Let's look to the future.
  8. Restraint No more remorse: we are allowed to do what is good for us.
  9. Boundaries There is no one right or wrong way to do something. Let's enjoy the great diversity of life.
  10. Denial Let's shake off the idea that our dreams are not as important as those of others. Let's follow the voice of our heart.
