How much ginger is healthy?

The tuber is popular for combating colds and boosting the metabolism. After all, it is said to have many positive properties. But at what point can the dosage become dangerous?

Dosage: too much ginger can be dangerous

Whether for symptoms of illness, to lose weight or simply for the taste: many people like to use ginger. The spicy tuber can be brewed as a tea, for example, or used as an ingredient to refine your lunch.
The medicinal plant boosts our digestion and has been proven to strengthen the immune system. However, despite its great properties, ginger should only be consumed in moderation.
The daily dose of ginger powder should not exceed two to a maximum of five grams. We should limit fresh ginger to a maximum of 50 grams per day.
Otherwise it can cause heartburn, flatulence, diarrhea or irritation in the mouth.

When you should avoid ginger

There are certain situations in which ginger is not particularly good for us. In these circumstances, the tuber should only be consumed in moderation or preferably not at all:

  • In the case of heartburn: Ginger stimulates digestion and therefore produces more stomach acid. This can lead to even more heartburn.
  • shortly before an operation: the tuber acts as a natural blood thinner and is therefore not suitable before operations.
  • for menstrual cramps: As the medicinal plant acts like a blood thinner, it can also exacerbate existing menstrual cramps.
  • during pregnancy: Ginger is said to have a labor-promoting effect, which is why pregnant women should refrain from consuming it.
